Bas - relief of Colonel Veselin Valkov

On September 8, 2012 at an official ceremony, the Mayor of Haskovo Municipality inaugurated a bas-relief of Colonel Veselin Valkov. The bas-relief is located next to Lyuben Karavelov Primary School and by decision of the Municipal Council the main street of Kenana Park bears the name of the Colonel.
 
Colonel Veselin Valkov was born in Haskovo in 1908. In 1932 he graduated with excellent score 51st class of the Military School of His Majesty Tsar Boris ІІІ. In 1935 he was promoted to lieutenant, and at the beginning of the war he was appointed commander of the 10thBorder Company. In 1941, he was promoted to Captain and together with 1st Infantry Rhodope Regiment and his family moved to the Greek city Drama. In August 1944, the events found him as colonel and commander of 68th infantry regiment. The same year he was given the command over 10th Infantry Rhodope Regiment.
 
Colonel Veselin Valkov is also an author of the memorial book “Rhodopeans in retreat, which describes the heroism of Rhodopeans during World War II. Colonel Valkov died under tragic circumstances in December 1972.
